Beckenbauer: Bayern should keep Lucio

MUNICH (AP) - Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has sought to calm speculation that Brazil defender Lucio may leave the club, arguing that "we should keep him."

The 31-year-old Brazil captain, currently at the Confederations Cup in South Africa, has said he wants to play a few more years in Europe but is not sure whether he will remain with Bayern Munich next season following reported criticism from new coach Louis Van Gaal.

"I think the whole thing is based on misunderstandings," Beckenbauer was quoted Wednesday as telling the Bild newspaper.

"These should be dispelled quickly when all concerned are in Munich," he added. "Lucio is the captain of Brazil and our best in defense. We should keep him."

Bayern has made several major signings for the new season, including Croatia forward Ivica Olic and Germany striker Mario Gomez.
